Goodbye to You
It’s 1982, and you just got dumped by your boyfriend. So… are you gonna sit there hugging your Monchhichi dolls, moping, and listening to “Open Arms” while crying uncontrollably? Or are you gonna pick yourself up, blast Scandal’s “Goodbye to You”, and grab your hairbrush for a little lip-sync action?
That’s what we thought. Good choice.
One of the best kiss-off songs ever written (and a true 80s new wave classic), “Goodbye to You” never cracked the top 50 on the Billboard charts, but there’s not many early 80s compilations that don’t include it. And rightfully so– it’s quick (only 3:30ish), it’s got a great beat, and it’s insanely easy to sing along to. And (trivia alert!) it features none other than Paul Shaffer on that wicked keyboard solo.
If all that weren’t enough, the video is even better.
In the early 80s, you couldn’t really watch MTV for more than an hour, it seemed, without seeing Patty Smyth bopping around that tiny white room room in her red dress, while her sooooo 80s bandmates bopped right along beside her.
We ♥ Goodbye to You.
