New Kids On The Block

Jordan! Jonathon! Joey! Donnie! Danny! If screaming out those names means nothing to you we suggest you just move along, friend. Kidding! Stay. Let us educate you in case you’re unaware. Those names just happen to belong to one of the “original” boy bands and a huge hit in the late 80s. New Kids on the Block may have debuted in 1986 but it wasn’t until 1988 that they really hit it big.

The group was assembled in Boston in 1984 and dealt with the typical growing pains. Someone was in one day and out the next (Sorry, Jamie Kelly…) Thankfully, the replacement put Joey front and center of the band and lots of hearts. His voice made girls swoon. Of course it might have been that dreamy face or that adorable curly hair… We’re just not sure. Then of course there was the bad boy, Donnie… He appealed to our edgy side. But what about Jordan and Jonathon? The brothers with their over-gelled hair definitely made some hearts skip a beat. Then, there was Danny. And Danny? Well, let’s just say we’re sure he had a great personality.

We would be willing to bet the house on one thing: No other band inspired the sales of so many giant buttons like this one. (Ok, we don’t have the official stats on that claim but how could it not be true?! Those buttons were everywhere!) With songs like “Hangin’ Tough,” “You’ve Got It (The Right Stuff),” and “Cover Girl” kids across the nation were bee-boppin’ along. You couldn’t NOT dance to it. Hell, don’t even get us started on the guys’ dance moves…

The band eventually went on to break up in the 90s (See? Nothing good can come from that decade…) and unsuccessfully tried to reunite several times. In 2008 it happened and suddenly the guys were back on the scene, although with a following not nearly as large as their beloved 80s crowd. Even though their biggest hits may have happened in the last year of our favorite decade it definitely didn’t make us love them any less. In fact, it might make us love them more.
