The Goonies

Goonies never say die.

Goonies also never really went the safest route when it came to handling things, so there was always a chance that they MIGHT have to say die but thankfully, it never happened. (Heh, if you hit the wrong note then we’ll all B Flat!) Treasure hunts, bad guys and pirate ships… all on the Oregon coast. Oh, and of course we can’t forget Cyndi Lauper’s bodacious theme song.

Mikey, Mouth, Chunk, Data, Brand, Andy, and Stef only wanted one thing, and that was to not have to move away just because some evil contractor wanted to bulldoze all their houses. (Hey – it’s not a big request.) Throw in a legend about Chester Copperpot, One-Eyed Willy, some buried treasure, a map, a disfigured but loveable sidekick, and the Fratellis and you had yourself The Goonies.

With so many great characters, it’s hard to choose just one. You had Chunk with his Truffle Shuffle and his “stories” (Ok, so Michael Jackson didn’t come over to my house to use the bathroom… But his sister did!) Mouth with his outrageous well, mouth. (It rarely stopped moving.) Data with all of his terrible inventions and inability to remember they’re called “booby” traps. (Booty traps! That’s what I said!) And then there was Mikey (and his inhaler)… the well-intentioned leader who sometimes just did what his heart wanted. Brand, his older brother, may have gotten tired of taking care of his kid bro, but he wasn’t going to let anything happen to him, so of course he was along for the ride. And we can’t leave out Andy and Stef, the obligatory girls who actually provide a lot more laughs than one would expect. (I feel like I’m babysitting only I’m not getting paid.)

The movie debuted in 1985, and it has since become a huge hit with not only kids of the 80s but younger generations as well. It was like Indiana Jones (of course we love him) but for kids! One of the most quoted movies from the decade (Don’t even act like you’ve never screamed, “Hey you guyyyyyys!” We wouldn’t believe you anyway.) The Goonies was never nominated for any of the big-deal awards but despite it all, it went on to be incredibly popular. And today? Well, today just happens to be it’s 25th birthday… and Goonies, we may ♥ you more now than we did back then. Maybe.

We ♥ The Goonies.
