Rhythm of the Night

“When it feels like the world is on your shoulders, and all of the madness has got you going crazy…”

Occasionally in the 80s something so cheesy came down the pike that you couldn’t help but love it. (Actually… come to think of it, most 80s stuff was so cheesy that you couldn’t help but love it. But, hey, that’s why we’re all here.)

In March 1985, a new movie hit theaters– a little gem called Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon (Oh, be patient, friends… we’ll have more on that later).

And the soundtrack featured some of the most 80s-ish tunes you could ask for, including hits (?) by Vanity, Rockwell, and… yes, DeBarge.

Thus, the world was introduced to “Rhythm of the Night”.

An instant hit for the Debarge clan (Bunny, Marty, Randy, Eldra -yep, we know you remember “El”-, and James), “Rhythm of the Night” climbed the charts and landed all the way up there at #3 (and #1 on the Adult Contemporary and R&B charts.)

With its decidedly calypso flair and those Michael Jackson-esque vocals from El, what’s not to love? If you listen closely, you can almost hear the jheri curled hair swishing around…

Wanna remember the really hot dance moves from the 80s? Well, oh 80s compadres of ours, look no further than this video:

Oh sweet mercy, it’s like it’s 1985 all over again.

Bonus points for those of you who knew that the songwriter for this little piece of 80s heaven is none other than…

Diane Warren! Yep… the woman who never met a syrupy ballad that she didn’t like got a HUGE career boost from Debarge’s first big hit.

…and aren’t we all just a little better for it?

We ♥ Rhythm of the Night.
