The Maxell ad
We’ve all seen the ad, either on TV or as a poster in your 80s dorm room. (Don’t lie. We know for a fact that you’re that hip.)
There’s a leather-jacketed dude chillin’ in his chair, listening to the stereo… only it looks like he’s sitting in front of some kind of heavy duty exhaust fan. It’s such a powerful wind, in fact, that his tie is billowing behind him and his glass of water almost tips over.
To cap it all off, none other than the always-awesome ‘Ride of the Valkyries’ by Richard Wagner is the soundtrack of choice.
It was a Maxell ad for the ages, stressing the importance of the ‘fi’ in your hi-fi system, because what good is your Duran Duran cassette if if just sounds raspy and warbled? No good at all– that’s what we say.
The iconic image has popped up in hundreds of different places, from the panels of the Bloom County comic strip, to Diddy’s 2006 song (feat. Christina Aguilera) “Tell Me”, to this year’s Jackass 3D movie.
It’s so iconic, in fact, that Maxell brought back the image themselves for a short-lived 2005 ad campaign.
We may not buy cassettes anymore (or care about high-fidelity), but we’ll always remember ‘that ad’. Because it was so awesome.
We ♥ the Maxell ad.
