Every Breath You Take

When is a love song not a love song? Only when it’s the number one song of all of 1983, thankyouverymuch.

The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” began burning up the charts in June of that year, and within five short weeks, it was the number one song in the land… and it would stay number one for eight straight weeks. That’s a level of awesome-ness that even Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” couldn’t beat.

The thing is, so many people (just because of its slow tempo perhaps?) thought this little ditty was a beautiful love song. Hello? Does anyone pay attention to lyrics anymore?

Let’s take a quick look-see, shall we?

“Every single day, every word you say, every game you play, every night you stay, I’ll be watching you.”

Ahhh… nothing says ‘true love’ like an almost criminal level of possession, not to mention the whole ‘surveillance’ issue. Peeping Tom much?

Whatever, it’s still a pretty darn fine piece of music, even if it was perhaps one of the most egregiously misunderstood songs from our favorite decade.

In all, “Every Breath You Take” would spend 22 weeks on the Billboard charts. Not bad for a sappy love song. Oh… wait.

We ♥ Every Breath You Take.
