Tarzan Boy

“Jungle life, I’m far away from nowhere… On my own like Tarzan Boy.”

Webster’s defines ‘catchy’ as ‘easily retained in the memory’. We define it as ‘something (usually the melody from a killer 80s tune) that burrows into your head worse than one of Khan’s Ceti eels and doesn’t let go until you undergo a complete frontal lobotomy.’

We ask you, O Children of the 80s, is there a more catchy song than Baltimora’s “Tarzan Boy”?

If you’re scratching your head, let us refresh your memory:

“Oh oh oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh oh oh ohhhhhhh, Oh oh oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh oh oh ohhhhhhh…”

Good… now that we know what you’ll be humming for the rest of the day, we’ll continue.

“Tarzan Boy” was the first and only hit for Irish/Italian club band Baltimora, formed by Jimmy McShane in 1984. Less than a year after they decided to give it a go, “Tarzan Boy” started burning up the charts in Europe. It would take a little while longer to cross the pond; we here in the States first got our earful in late 1985. In all, “Tarzan Boy” would spend almost six months on the charts, but it would only peak at #13, and not until the spring of 1986.

Somehow, it’s often the smaller hits that remain with us most, and there’s just something about that driving guitar, the Tarzan yells, and the video (which features Jimmy looking suspiciously close to Tim Curry’s Dr. Frank-N-Furter from Rocky Horror) that has helped “Tarzan Boy” endure as a true classic one-hit wonder from our favorite decade.

Ok… you may now go get your lobotomy.

We ♥ Tarzan Boy.
