Sure, Asteroids and Space Invaders were about as classic as they come, but let’s face it- they were clunky, slow, and not very much to write home about.

Defender, though? Now we’re getting somewhere.

Pretty snazzy graphics, super-fast gameplay, and some of the most iconic sound effects to grace the 80s all helped turn Defender into one of the most loved arcade games ever.

As the curtain rises, you find yourself on a faraway planet as the pilot of a spaceship that looks suspiciously like a Viper from Battlestar Galactica). Below you lie miles and miles of mountains, peppered with the occasional astronaut. In front of you, the meanies… and lots of them.

There’s no time to waste. Start things going with a little tap on the thrust button, and you’re off. Meanies in front of you? Take ’em out, hotshot. Behind you? (And here’s where it gets fun…) Just turn around.

Yep, how cool is that?

But that’s not all. Looks like the meanies are trying to grab your astronauts there, bucko. Can you rescue them in time? Can you defend your planet? CAN A GAME BE ANY COOLER?

Defender has cemented itself in video game lore as the 8th-bestselling game of all time and the fifth when it comes to the number of quarters sucked in.

And even though it first hit the arcades all the way back in 1980, it’s one of the few classic games that still holds up today.

We ♥ Defender.
