Once Bitten Twice Shy

“Oh, woman, you’re a mess, gonna die in your sleep. There’s blood on my amp, and my Les Paul’s beat.”

As our favorite decade wore down, we could see the writing on the wall. All the hair metal goodness was dying out, soon to be replaced by grunge. But Great White wasn’t going to take it lying down (well… unless they were on a tour bus with their groupies. Wink wink.)

In ’87, the LA-based band released Once Bitten… to marginal success. And it only made sense that …Twice Shy would follow, and that the classic Ian Hunter rock(ish) tune that provided the inspiration for the names of the two albums would be their next single.

Sure enough, “Once Bitten Twice Shy” hit our waiting eardrums in the summer of ’89, and we ate it up like a, well… great white feeding on chum. Singer Jack Russell, who could out-belt just about any frontman at the time, hit us with that rockabilly-esque tune, and Great White has an instant hit on their hands.

The tune spent a whopping 26 weeks on the Billboard charts, peaking at #5 for a couple weeks in August. Great White might not have thought (or wanted) it to be their one and only hit, but such is life in the 80s.

These days, Great White is tragically more well known as the band that was performing at The Station (R.I.) that night in 2003 when a fire started by the their pyrotechnics killed 100 people including then-guitarist Ty Longley.

It was a bitterly tragic day, but Great White has gone on to pick up the pieces… as well as they could anyway. They’ve put out a couple albums in recent years, but it all comes back to that awesome tune from the summer of ’89. We couldn’t think of a better way for Hair Metal to bow out.

We ♥ Once Bitten Twice Shy.
