The Great Space Coaster

“It’s the Great Space Coaster, get on board! On the Great Space Coaster, we’ll explore!”

After The Muppets and just before Fraggle Rock, there was The Great Space Coaster. Call it second-rate Sesame Street for older kids, and you’d be in the right neighborhood.

We’re not entirely sure how we would have felt if we were playing in our front yard and a fat clown showed up, wanting to fly us off to some asteroid in his flying yellow roller-coaster car, but luckily Roy, Danny, and Francine had no such qualms.

So off they went to meet Goriddle Gorilla, Knock Knock, and the whole gang. And let us not forget good ol’ Gary Gnu and his really g-nice g-news reports. It’s not everyday you see a gnu wearing a turtleneck, after all.

We learned some, we laughed some, and we sung-along some (especially to that infectious theme song, which you’re no doubt humming to yourself right now)… but the best part? Well, it had to be Roy’s cool little portable, flip-up TV thingy, right? And those great little cartoons it showed with the grumpy, line-drawing guy who only spoke Italian. Brilliant!

The Great Space Coaster lasted for five years, from 1981-86, but we g-know it will g-never be forgotten. G-not if we can help it, anyway.

So for Baxter, Goriddle, Speed Reader, Edison, and the rest of the gang, this is Gary Gnu saying good g-night!

We ♥ The Great Space Coaster.

  1. I loved Gary Gnu! “No Gnews is Good Gnews with Gary…Gnu” I still say that sometimes and most people look at me like they have no idea what I am talking about.

A little trivia is that Kevin Clash did the voice of Goriddle Gorilla. Clash is best known now as the creator and voice of Elmo from Sesame Street.
