Dig Dug

We gotta be honest… with all the space-themed, alien invasion video games that we got in the early 80s, stuff like Dig Dug was a welcome sight.

No guns, no lasers, no spaceships… just a Smurf in a white helmet digging around underground while puffing up dragons with his bicycle pump until they explode.

Genius.

Created by Namco in 1982, Dig Dug was an instant hit in arcades, and while it never cracked the top 10 in revenue or sales, it has since gone on the be voted the #6 video game of all time, sitting right behind heavyweights like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Galaga.

It was the video game that introduced the world to the words “Pooka” and “Fygar” (your Dig Dug enemies), encouraged you to jostle boulders loose to squish them, and somehow also managed to remind you that eating fruit and vegetables is a good thing.

In our world, that’s a pretty awesome way to spend a quarter… or fifty.

We ♥ Dig Dug.
