In the summer of 1980, Stern Electronics decided to get in on the crazy ‘video game’ fad that was captivating the brains and eyeballs of children around the world.
And their first foray into that great beyond? Astro Invader.
You might not know it by name, but you sure as heck know it by sight––if for no other reason than the fact that it was featured prominently in the video for Tom Petty’s “You Got Lucky” (3:37 of this clip).
It was a relatively simple game, as games go. Since it arrived at the dawn of our favorite decade, it was pretty ‘8-bit’, but still darn entertaining… and challenging. Your lone ship against upwards of 200 little snowflake/asterisk-shaped baddies? With the occasional UFO dropping down to wreak even more havoc? And gnarly lightning bolts that shot out of the baddies when the reached the bottom of the screen?
Of course Astro Invader was all but forgotten as video games got more and more advanced, but we still think we, uh… got lucky to play it while we still had the chance.
We ♥ Astro Invader.
