Sometimes here on Best of the 80s we’ll say we ♥ something… even though in its day it may have been just this side of frustrating.

Case in point? Zaxxon.

Sure, looking back, it was one heck of a video game. Bright colors, fluid gameplay, and innovative 3-dimensional graphics made Zaxxon stand head and shoulders above almost anything else in the arcade.

But damn, that 3D stuff drove us nuts sometimes.

We can all agree that it was a good idea on paper, but not having any perspective tended to wreak, oh, just a wee bit of havoc as we tried to avoid being blown to starburst-y bits by enemy planes.

Created in 1982 by Sega, Zaxxon was ahead of its time, and in the months and years to come, game designers would build on the whole “axonometric projection” idea to create even cooler games.

As frustrated as we got, though, we were always the first to drop our quarters in this little gem of an arcade powerhouse.

Heck, I guess when we say we ♥ Zaxxon, we really do mean…

We ♥ Zaxxon.
