Coca-Cola Clothing

You’re trying to emerge from what’s possibly the biggest PR debacle of the decade… so what do you do?

Well, you create a line of clothing, of course.

In 1985, Coca-Cola had a bit of an issue on its hands. After trying (and failing) to re-launch its world famous flagship product as “New Coke”, life was not going too well at HQ.

But someone in a corner office had a bright idea. Apparently after seeing one Benetton rugby shirt too many, he (or she) thought they might be on to something. Behold… the Coca-Cola line.

From rugby shirts to T-shirts to jeans, Coca-Cola fashion was all over everyone everywhere in the mid-80s. The kids who donned Swatches, Jams, and pegged jeans now had to make a little more room in their closet. And pity the poor parents who were already leery about the weekend trips to Macy’s.

Along with the bright, vivid colors that made Benetton famous, Coca-Cola also dabbled a little in the pastels, which made them just that much more appealing. Yellow, baby blue, and, of course, pink rugby shirts were all the rage. And don’t forget that swirly Coca-Cola logo splashed across the front.

Sure–– within a year or two, Coca-Cola fashion had gone the way of, well… New Coke. But for those bright, shining moments in the mid-80s we loved to just wear a Coke and a smile.

We ♥ Coca-Cola Clothing.
