Ms. Pac-Man

“What’s the difference between Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man, really?” “Well, she has a bow on her head”. “That’s it? Get right out of town!” – Wayne’s World

Sure, to the untrained eye Ms. Pac-Man may be little more than a cute, pink version of what’s perhaps the most popular arcade game of the 80s.

But that, dear friends, would be where you’re wrong.

For you see, Ms. Pac-Man had different mazes, different music, and the fruits popped up all over the place instead of right there in the center of the board. Plus (and this is where it gets good) we also got to see a little bit of the Pac and the missus’ backstory. (Baby Pac-Man! Who knew?)

An obvious attempt to get more females into the arcades, Ms. Pac-Man was actually an instant hit among everyone. Girls gobbled it up like, well… Ms. Pac-Man gobbling up power pellets, and boys devoured it like, well… ghosts devouring Ms. Pac-Man.

Almost any video game fan (particularly us 80s kids) will tell you that the lady Pac-Man blew the original out of the water… but did you know it almost didn’t see the light of day?

Turns out Midway (the US distributor of Pac-Man) was tired of waiting for a sequel to Pac-Man, when lo and behold they were presented with the female version. Then, unbeknownst to Namco (who owned the rights to Pac-Man), Midway put the game out there… oops.

Of course, all’s well that ends well, and Ms. Pac-Man? Well, it doesn’t get much better than that.

We ♥ Ms. Pac-Man.
