Tainted Love

“Sometimes I feel I’ve got to (BOW! BOW!) run away…”

Did you know that arguably the best one-hit wonder of our entire favorite decade was a cover of a 1965 R&B tune from Gloria Jones?

If you did, score! You’re a true 80s child. If not, don’t worry; you’re not alone.

Indeed, the 1981/2 hit “Tainted Love” was originally written by Ed Cobb (who Boston sports fans know as the writer of “Dirty Water”) back in the 60s, but it wasn’t until the British duo Soft Cell slowed it the heck down and synthed it the heck up that it became the uber-hit we know today.

Add to it (in the 12″ remix) a smooth transition to their cover of The Supremes’ “Where Did Our Love Go”, and you have yourself a bona fide 80s classic, ladies and gentlemen.

So classic, in fact, that it stands as the #5 one-hit wonder of all time on the VH1 list. And since #1 is “The Macarena”, we’ll go ahead and just give our boys the top slot by default.

In all, “Tainted Love” spent a whopping 43 weeks on the charts, peaking at #8 for two weeks in July 1982. No it never hit #1, but just try to find a New Wave 80s compilation these days that doesn’t include this tubular little tune, and we’ll eat our shirts.

…or, at the very least, we’ll BOW! BOW! get away.

We ♥ Tainted Love.
