Pee-wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special

“♫ ♪ Oh, it’s Christmas in the Playhouse, and our hearts are all aglow… ♪”

1988 was a particularly bad year for TV (what with the Writers’ Strike and all), and no kids’ show arguably suffered more than the hallowed Pee-wee’s Playhouse.

Only three new episodes of our beloved Pee-wee aired that fall, and one of them didn’t even make it onto the air until the end of December. Fortunately, though, it was one of the best holiday TV specials to emerge from our favorite decade… yes, kids, it’s the Pee-wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special.

Sure, all of Pee-wee’s regular motley crew were there (Pterri, Conky, Fish, Cowntess…), but we also got a veritable bevy of stars along for the ride, too.

From the sleigh ride with Magic Johnson (’cause he’s Magic Screen’s cousin, dontchaknow), to the abrupt (though hilarious) brush-off of Whoopi Goldberg, to Grace Jones’, um, haunting rendition of “The Little Drummer Boy”, it was all there. And did we mention Annette Funicello, Frankie Avalon, Dinah Shore, Joan Rivers, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Oprah Winfrey, Little Richard, Charo, k.d. lang, and the Del Rubio triplets?

Yes, it was a lot to cram into one hour, but our pal Pee-wee managed it somehow… plus there was still time left over for a visit from Santa and for Pee-wee’s buff contractors to build an entire room out of fruitcakes.

In our minds, that’s one heck of a Christmas special.

Mecca lecca hi, mecca ho-ho-ho!

We ♥ the Pee-wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special.

  1. Not just a great Christmas special, but one of the best exercises in GLBT pride ever committed to celluloid.
