A Very Special Christmas

“It’s Christmas time in Hollis, Queens. Mom’s cookin’ chicken and collard greens…”

As the holidays rolled around in 1987, a bright, new, shiny, red album (or cassette, if you prefer) hit store shelves. A Very Special Christmas, featuring cover artwork by the great Keith Haring, was chock-ful of holiday favorites from some of the biggest artists of the time–– including Madonna, Run-DMC (and their “Christmas in Hollis”, above), and Whitney Houston.

With the proceeds from the album’s sales going to help fund Special Olympics, it was a complete no-brainer, must-have, bit of holiday goodness, and apparently everyone agreed with us. Produced by music god Jimmy “Rattle and Hum” Iovine, A Very Special Christmas was an instant hit, going on to sell more than 4 million copies.

And did we mention U2 came along for the ride, too?

The Very Special Christmas franchise is still going strong today (A Very Special Christmas 7 was released in 2009), but we’ll always remember how it all started…

…with Bon Jovi singing “Back Door Santa” (though in later copies, that ‘racy’ tune was replaced by their other holiday hit, “I Wish Every Day Could Be Like Christmas”).

We ♥ A Very Special Christmas.
