Your Love

“Josie’s on a vacation far away, come around and talk it over…”

You can go ahead and file this one right up there with “Every Breath You Take” and “If You Leave” in the ‘you-missed-the-whole-point’ song department. We’ll go out on a limb and guess that there were at least a few kids in the 80s who thought The Outfield’s “Your Love” was a sunny, boppy song about, well… love.

Those of us who paid attention know it’s the melodic tale of a slimy young man who wants to use a girl’s love while his Josie is far away. Not a happy story.

“Stay the night, but keep it under cover”? Dude, you’re cheatin’ on your woman! And, really… what did she ever do to you? Seems like her worst crime is that she went on vacation. Sheesh.

All that being said, though, we can’t help but put this in our Top-20 list of one-hit wonders from the 80s, particularly thanks to lead singer Tony Lewis’ channeling of Yes frontman Jon Anderson’s voice.

And we also can’t help but wonder why The Outfield didn’t have a little more success than they did. In the U.S., “Your Love” spent 22 weeks on the Billboard chart, peaking at #6 in May 1986. Not bad, sure… but that’s the last we ever heard of the guys. And heck, they fared even worse in their native England, where “Your Love” peaked at an abysmal #83 on the charts.

Over the years, though, “Your Love” has stayed alive… getting covered by dozens of different artists, most famously by Katy Perry on her Ur So Gay EP.

It may not be a ‘happy’ tune, but who says everything has to be sunshine and roses? Sometimes a song about a schmuck who just wants to use you is just what the doctor ordered.

Ah, love.

We ♥ Your Love.
