Bone, Crossbeak, and Bonnet

If you recognize those names, then you, friend, are a true child of the 80s, and we will never again doubt your prowess when it comes to pop culture during our favorite decade.

If you have no idea who Bone, Bonnet, and Crossbeak are, well… what if we said Fred, Wilma, and Bamm-Bamm? (And, no, we don’t mean the Flintstones.)

We are, of course, talking about the three whales who found themselves trapped under the ice in Barrow, Alaska, in the fall of 1988. Their rescue made international headlines for the better part of three weeks, and it’s now the subject of the movie Big Miracle, starring John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore. (The whales were given those more cartoony cutesy names for the movie version.)

It all started on October 7, 1988, when a native fisherman first spotted the whales coming up for air in a tiny hole in the ice, nearly five miles from the open sea (where they should have been). Instead of just letting nature take its course, though, marine biologists got involved, and before long, Greenpeace, Ronald Reagan, and even the Soviet Union were doing all they could to save these three whales.

While the movie romanticizes the story quite a bit (among other things, it suggests the local TV reporter and the Greenpeace rep, as played by Krasinski and Barrymore, had a bit of a history, and that the whales were mommy, daddy, and little baby when, in truth, all three were young whales), it’s still a nice trip down memory lane. Chock-full of original news footage (Peter Jennings, Dan Rather, and Tom Brokaw’s reports all figure prominently), it gives folks in 2011 a nice reminder of one of the more uplifting and captivating moments from the 80s.

No one knows what ever became of Crossbeak and Bonnet (Bone >SPOILER ALERT!< died before the path was cleared for them all to get to sea), but we like to think they're still out there, splashing around in the Pacific, waiting for the movie to come out on DVD in a few months so they can check it out in the comfort of their super-cool underwater whale house.

Hey, we can dream.

We ♥ Bone, Crossbeak, and Bonnet.
