“There’s nothing left to talk about, unless it’s horizontally.”

If we had asked you (before you saw this post) what the #1 song of our favorite decade was, what would you have guessed? “Billie Jean”? “Like a Virigin”? “Jump”?

Nope. No. And uh-uh.

Indeed it is Olivia Netwon-John’s ode to the beast with two backs that claims that title. 10 weeks in the top spot (from November 1981 to January 1982) and certified double platinum, “Physical” was an 80s juggernaut…and quite a departure for the woman best known, at that point, for being Grease‘s Sandy and the roller-skating goddess Kira in Xanadu. All of a sudden she’s singing about how she wants to “get animal” in a music video that’s nothing short of a non-stop orgy of aerobic-themed soft porn.

Written by Steve Kipner and Terry Shaddick (who, 20 years later, would be responsible for Christina Aguilera’s equally-sexual #1 hit “Genie in a Bottle”), “Physical” wasn’t only a catchy tune with a retro-disco feel, it had the good fortune to be released less than two months after the arrival of MTV. And when you hit the hottest medium of its day with a sweaty, hardbody-filled video, is it any wonder little Sandy Olsson became all the rage in her spandex leotard?

We still feel a little dirty even thinking about “Physical”, especially given how young and naive we were when it first hit our eardrums (and eyes), but there’s no denying it– and the next time someone asks, you’ll know the answer: “What was the biggest song of the 80s?”…

We ♥ Physical.
