Casey the Talking Tape Player

Christmas 1985 was a fairly magical time, are we right, 80s people?

Cabbage Patch Kids, of course, were the big thing that holiday season, but there were plenty of other goodies to choose from, too—including Transformers, Teddy Ruxpin…and good ol’ Casey the Talking Tape Player.

The brainchild of the folks at Playskool, Casey was a technological marvel. Not only could he play your tapes (Duran Duran, Madonna, etc.), he could also mouth along with the words…well, kinda. His little LED face would move in time with the music. And he could even tell you a joke! And read stories! A whole line of storybooks were available (with accompanying tapes), so he could spin yarns like “The Gingerbread Man”, “Casey Finds a Friend”, and “Casey and the Runaway Baby”. Plus there were coloring books available, too!

All you had to do was pop a tape in, press Casey’s “Go Tie” (Get it? Ha!), and our favorite little talking robot was off and running. (Well, not really. The one thing Casey didn’t do was actually move… you know, like a robot.)

Alas, our boy Casey got lost in the rush for other “cooler” toys in 1985, and before the next year was out, he had all but vanished. But for one brief shining moment, there was a blue plastic robot named Casey. And he was fun.

We loved him then, and even today…

We ♥ Casey the Talking Tape Player.
