She’s a Beauty

“Step right up and don’t be shy, because you will not believe your eyes…”

We’re willing to bet that hearing The Tubes’ “She’s a Beauty” invokes certain images in your mind…like a carnival sideshow and a little boy riding along with a dominatrix as they pass a ballerina, a mermaid, and an acrobat, and then also crash into a tower of amplifiers.

Are we wrong?

Nope, didn’t think so.

“She’s a Beauty” is one of those tunes from the early 80s whose popularity was driven almost entirely by its music video. In the first few years of MTV’s existence there were precious few videos in rotation, so when one came along as memorable (and, frankly, lascivious) as this one, the song can’t help but reap the benefits.

Sure enough, “She’s a Beauty” was The Tubes’ biggest hit by far——their only song, in fact, to crack the top 30. All told, it spend 20 weeks in the Billboard Hot 100, reaching #10 in July 1983, easily qualifying the San Francisco-based band as a one-hit wonder. But oh, what a hit it was…

The video’s director, Kenny Ortega, would later go on to be a renowned choreographer, lending his talents to movies like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pretty in Pink, and, of course, Dirty Dancing. And that little kid who goes for the ride of his life in the video? It’s none other than the late Alexis (then known as Robert) Arquette——who would later appear as the 80s-tastic Boy George-esque singer in Adam Sandler’s The Wedding Singer.

Small world, right?

The 80s were full of great songs and great videos, but we’ll still put The Tubes’ “She’s a Beauty” up against most of them.

“…but don’t fall in love!”

We ♥ She’s a Beauty.
