New Coke

No. No it didn't.

On April 19th, 1985, Coca-Cola piqued our interest when they announced that they were onto something… that soon enough the public would be let in on their plan to change the world of soda as we knew it. It was going be big. It was going be important and, by God, it was coming from Coca-Cola.

Of course we all waited with baited breath, although surely we weren’t as nervous as Pepsi was. April 23rd dawned like any other day, and then the huge and important change was revealed: New Coke. And we rejoiced! Lines formed! Change was counted! Sips were sipped!

But then: complete and utter letdown.

It was just Pepsi! But more gross! And flatter! Pepsi, obviously very excited their rival had essentially copied their formula, declared victory in the cola wars, and they even let all of their employees have the day off!

New Coke was a huge failure. Nobody (seriously… nobody) liked it, and sales plummeted. It wasn’t long before the company admitted defeat and went back to their original formula. Sales went back up, and all was right with the world.

New Coke wasn’t done, though. The company tried changing it’s name to Coca-Cola II to lure the public in again. Nice try, Coca-Cola Company, but… It didn’t work, and eventually the sad little impostor faded from the shelves.

So, this one’s for you, New Coke. You may have only lasted 77 days but man, you lasted 77 days in the eighties. And that, my friend, is a true feat.

We ♥ New Coke.
